A Short Drive.

We took a short drive this afternoon to see Custer and the area. This morning we caught up with a few things around the mothership and finish some setup items we didn’t do yesterday; by this afternoon we felt like getting out for a ride.

We drove through Custer City, took a turn or two and found ourselves at Stockade Lake inside Custer State Park. We parked in a picnic area, walked along the shore and just enjoyed the weather and the view. After our short walk we decided to drive back to Custer City and then west on Hwy 16 toward Wyoming.

The lake was a great spot to relax and enjoy the day.

We drove west past the campground and turned north on US Forest Service Road 288. There is a lot of logging in this area, we assume they are trying to stay ahead of the pine beetle that has been killing trees out here. The road took us up a valley and along a ridge, at a break in the trees we stopped to take a few pictures when we noticed something familiar in the distance.

We stopped to check the view and in the distance we could see the Crazy Horse Monument.

The view from the ridge was not limited to Crazy Horse.

We returned to Hwy 16 and Beaver Lake via Forest Service Road 287; the sky was getting dark and severe thunderstorm warnings were popping up for the area. We sat tight in the mothership as the storm passed by us with heavy rain and some small hail; we are thankful for the lack of damaging weather and hope that no one else was seriously affected.

While in the Custer area don't miss Wind Cave National Park and Jewel Cave National Monument. They are both hidden jewels in the National Park system.

Wind Cave has been a National Park since 1903 and Jewel Cave is the second longest cave in the world. Neither gets near enough publicity.
