It was a nice day for a drive so we took the CRV up into the Bighorn National Forest to take a scenic drive on the Cloud Peak Skyway from Buffalo to Ten Sleep. The drive takes you on US Highway 16 which is a fairly busy road, so there are trucks and other traffic that are not interested in driving slow to look at the scenery (although some of the trucks are slow going up and down).
From Buffalo, Highway 16 climbs up into the Bighorn Mountains with a nice view of the forest and snow-covered peaks. We made a couple of stops to snap some pictures but otherwise kept moving.
Leaving Buffalo, US 16 climbs up toward the forest.
The Skyway takes you a little closer to the peaks of the Bighorn Mountains.
The wildflowers were blooming today.
The road descended toward Ten Sleep traveling through a rocky valley with some slow hairpin turns. Ten Sleep is an interesting place with several saloons including The Crazy Woman Saloon and Dirty Sally’s; with only 300 residents it may be a happening place on Saturday night.
Interesting rock formations as you drop into the valley toward Ten Sleep.
Slow trucks and corners going down.
It was a nice ride.
We turned around in Ten Sleep and repeated most of our journey on Highway 16; we did turn off for a side trip but we will do our blog on that tomorrow.
The area around Ten Sleep has a lot of red rock.
Looking back up the valley as we ascend from Ten Sleep.
We stopped at Meadow Lark Lake for a few minutes.
There is still some snow up there.
The blooms were great.

Beautiful views! The last picture of the flowers sort of look like bluebonnets...kinda made me homesick :(
