The Silver Strand

Packed up the bicycles and drove out to the Silver Strand State Beach area to ride from the south end into Coronado; the bicycle trail is a former railroad line on the peninsula that forms the south end of San Diego Bay. The four lanes of highway 75 run beside the trail so it was a bit noisy but otherwise a nice ride.

We planned to ride from the south so we would have the wind at our backs on the return trip. It was an easy ride as the wind was slight and the trail was level so we made it to Coronado fairly quickly; we didn’t ride very far into Coronado before we turned around and ate our lunch at a city park on the bay side of the strand. After lunch we rode back to the CRV and returned to Santee, we only rode 13.75 miles total.

Looking north along the bicycle trail from our starting point.

The Coronado Hotel.

The Coronado Bridge crosses the harbor.

The city park where we stopped for our picnic.

While we ate we noticed splashing in the bay, as they got closer we could see it was three female swimmers, they walked out of the water at the park and left.

Looking across the bay at the naval station, several ships were in dry dock.

The Navy’s Amphibious Training Center is located along the bike trail, this is the Special Operations Center which is where I believe Navy Seals are trained.

We stopped for a quick look at the Pacific.
