The Price Is Right

When we were home Sandy worked on her plan for storing items in a three slide floor plan like the Ambassador 40 SKT that we had looked at. Although the motor home was five feet longer than our Vacationer the storage opportunities inside and outside were very different and not necessarily better.

The sales person from Burlington called about once a week and continued to work on the price, the head of the sales department also called and was working on us from the standpoint of service; we had a few service appointments at Burlington and were pleased with their work but for us it wasn’t the selling point he seemed to think it was.

As the price continued to drop we continued to think more seriously about purchasing earlier than our original time line. We had a few ideas for adding storage inside the motor home and the early purchase would allow John more time to work on our plan. There were some new clean air requirements that would be adding emissions equipment, maintenance, and price to diesel engines produced after January 1, 2007; this unit did not have this equipment but a  2008 model may.

We liked the unit and as we continued to talk with the sales person we were finally able to agree on a price and signed the papers on October 27, 2006. We picked up the unit a couple of weeks later and enjoyed our first weekend in it a few miles from home at Calumet County Park during a very warm opening weekend of the deer hunting season.

First weekend trip, we had the park to ourselves.

40 SKT floor plan puts living room in the middle.

During our first weekend in the Ambassador we finalized the plan for adding shelves and storage to the unit. John purchased the wood and produced about fifteen extra shelves that were added to various existing cabinets along with two additional cabinets; a small cabinet for the bathroom and a larger one inside the bedroom closet. As I write this in 2009 it’s hard to believe we have had this motor home for three years and it is now ready to become our home.

Shelving was added to this cabinet.

A cabinet with shelves was added inside the bedroom closet with a 2nd bar below the first to hang another row of cloths.

As we used this coach we found that we liked the floor plan that put the living room in the middle as it seems more private than our other coaches; we also like not having to step through the bathroom each time we walk to the bedroom and we appreciate the light that the large windows in the hall let into the coach.
