We Revisit The Scene

This trip was a return to Myrtle Beach South Carolina to celebrate our anniversary and revisit a city and beach we enjoyed during our first stay in 1999. We called Pirate Land and tried to reserve the site we had in 1999 but were told that it was already taken. At that point we decided to try Ocean Lakes which is located next to Pirate Land; we had noticed this park from our site at Pirate Land and thought we would enjoy staying there.

The drive to South Carolina was interrupted by our first blowout on the mothership. We called Coach-Net only to find that our roadside assistance had expired, they renewed our policy and located a tire service to help us but it would take about three hours for them to arrive. The Vacationer was equipped with a spare tire and wheel, we carried a jack and enough tools so John was able to change the outside right rear tire in about 45 minutes. We cancelled the tire service and were on our way; when we arrived in Myrtle Beach we visited Camping World to replace the tire with a new Goodyear.

Ocean Lakes is a large park but it was December so we had no problem getting an ocean front site. We got parked and connected quickly and then took a walk through the park; the size of the park allows a variety of sites, some shaded, others in the sun, some on the ocean and others around inland lagoons, and some in quiet secluded areas; there are also a number of very nice park models located toward the back of the property.

This image of a fishing trawler was taken from our bedroom window early one morning.

We returned to Ripley's Aquarium and Barefoot Landing for some entertainment and shopping. Ripley’s is a large aquarium with a variety of displays, we enjoyed our visit in 1999 and found it just as interesting on our return visit; there was a display about the ship and sinking of the Titanic. Barefoot Landing is a nice place to walk and visit a variety of unique shops, the shops are placed around a lagoon and are fun to visit even if you are just looking.

Located near Ocean Lakes is Huntington Beach State Park, we visited the park to walk the trails but we also enjoyed a tour of Atalaya Castle. The castle has an interesting history and is the site of the Atalaya Arts and Crafts Festival each September. Outside the castle we enjoyed a walk on the beach, due to the time of year it seemed as though the beach was reserved just for us.

We enjoyed our 2nd visit to Myrtle Beach and our first visit to Ocean Lakes. Although it was off season we had a relaxing stay and enjoyed two rounds of golf, miniature golf that is. We had an uneventful return to Wisconsin where we enjoyed Christmas and started planning for our next adventure.
